Nano Banana 2.1 vs Nano Banana Pro.
Nano Banana Pro has been the premium choice since November 2025: Google's reasoning-heavy model for complex images. Nano Banana 2.1 is a Flash-class model at a fraction of the price, and on the leaderboards the gap that justified Pro has narrowed to a few points on one board and reversed on the other. Here is what is left.
Which one to pick.
For most work, Nano Banana 2.1 is the better buy. It costs 4.0 times less at 1K, 2.7 times less at 2K and 2.1 times less at 4K than Pro on Google's list prices, and it ranks above Pro on both Arena boards.
Pro's remaining case is narrow and real: Google positions it for the most complex visual tasks, and it is the only one of the two with dedicated style-reference slots in Google's reference table. If your images depend on those, test Pro. If they do not, you are paying more for a lower ranking.
- Choose Nano Banana 2.1 for
- Almost every use: scenes, thumbnails, product shots, text-heavy graphics, anything where cost per image matters.
- Choose Nano Banana Pro for
- Complex compositions where you have verified Pro's output is better, and workflows that use its style-reference slots.
The two side by side.

Arena (arena.ai) scores are rank and rating on its own boards, last updated 2026-10-06; they are never mixed here with another leaderboard’s scale. Arena marks a new model’s scores preliminary until enough votes are in. Nano Banana is a trademark of Google, and Autotube is not affiliated with Google.
Two to four times cheaper.
Google charges $0.134 for a Pro image at 1K or 2K and $0.24 at 4K. Nano Banana 2.1 is $0.0336 at 1K, $0.0504 at 2K and $0.113 at 4K: 4.0 times cheaper at 1K, 2.7 times at 2K, and 53% less at 4K.
Pro charges the same for a 1K image as for a 2K one, so its price only starts to look reasonable when you are generating at 2K. Even there, 2.1 is under 40% of the cost. The Batch API halves both models' rates, with Pro at $0.067 per 1K or 2K image and 2.1 at $0.0168 per 1K image.
The leaderboards now favour 2.1.
On Arena's text-to-image board, Nano Banana 2.1 is #5 on 1,328 and Nano Banana Pro is #16 on 1,248, 80 points behind. On the image-edit board the two are close: 2.1 is #6 on 1,428 and Pro #12 on 1,390, a gap of just 38.
Be careful with that edit gap. Arena marks 2.1's scores preliminary, resting on 12,985 votes, while Pro's rest on 651,674. A 38-point lead could easily close on more votes, so call editing a tie rather than a win. The text-to-image lead is wide enough to be more convincing. Arena lists Pro under two identifiers; we use its 2K entry, the higher of the two.
Leaderboards measure what voters preferred in head-to-head prompts. They do not test Pro's strengths as Google describes them, such as deep world knowledge and brand consistency, so a specific workload can still prefer Pro.
Wider canvas for 2.1, style slots for Pro.
Both models take up to 14 reference images, but Google divides them differently. Nano Banana 2.1 takes up to 10 objects and 4 characters; Pro takes up to 6 objects, 5 characters and 3 style references. If you need to hold five distinct characters in one frame, or feed dedicated style references, Pro's split is the better fit. For a lead character plus a crowd of props, 2.1's split is.
2.1 supports 14 aspect ratios, including the extreme 1:4, 4:1, 1:8 and 8:1, where Pro lists the 10 standard ones from 1:1 to 21:9. Both reach 4K, and both offer thinking mode and Google Search grounding. Google's guide credits 2.1 with improved text rendering and multi-turn consistency; for Pro it emphasizes world knowledge, localization and brand consistency.
Pro is still offered.
Google's deprecations table, updated October 7, 2026, lists Pro (gemini-3-pro-image) as stable with no shutdown date announced. Its preview identifier, gemini-3-pro-image-preview, was shut down on June 25, 2026. Nothing on Google's side forces a move today; the reason to move is that the same budget buys more with 2.1.
Nano Banana 2.1 is what Autotube runs.
Autotube runs every Nano Banana scene on Nano Banana 2.1 now, at 1K by default with a 2K tier for scenes that need a full 1080p frame. Nano Banana Pro is retired in Autotube. Presets that used it were moved to Nano Banana 2.1's 2K tier, which keeps the output at a full 1080p frame, and 2.1 takes up to 14 reference images in a scene.
